Cleopatra's Suicide

Cleopara's Suicide

When Octavian reached Cleopatra's monument he kept her talking through the barred door, while one his man climbed through a window.
Cleopatra tried to stab herself, but was disarmed and captures along with her children.

Cleopatra was determined to die - maybe because she lost Mark Antony, and she knew Octavian was going to drag her through Rome in chains. as her sister Arsinoe had been.
Octavian knew Cleopatra wanted to kill herself and kept her under guard. Cleopatra, nearly naked, pleaded with Octavian to let her live. Octavian took the bait and Cleopatra had one of her loyal subjects bring her a basket of figs with the Egyptian Cobra (Asp).
Cleopatra wrote a letter to Octavian asking to be buried in Antony's tomb.

When Octavian got there, it was too late. Cleopatra was dead on her golden bed. Her maids Charmion, and Iras dying at her feet.
Charmion, adjusting Cleopatra's crown with her last breath. When asked "Was this well done of your lady, Charmion?" To which she replied: "Extremely well, as became the descendant of so many kings."

The 39-year old queen had cheated Octavian of his last prize. Even in death Cleopatra was the greatest pharaoh.
Even in death Cleopatra will be remembered for all times.
